Ed Sheeran has recently completed the construction of his private chapel, featuring a distinctive flint-walled structure, on his extensive property in East Suffolk. The building project, which began over 19 months ago, is now fully visible to the local villagers as the scaffolding and plastic sheeting have been removed.

The boat-shaped chapel, with an impressive 25ft round tower, has been designed as a place of contemplation, prayer, and relaxation for Ed Sheeran and his loved ones. Stretching 65ft in length and adorned with a spiral staircase, the chapel sits on the edge of his estate, affectionately called ‘Sheeranville’ by the locals, near his hometown of Framlingham, Suffolk.

Originally, Ed Sheeran had plans for a larger chapel, but it was rejected by council planners due to objections from some neighbors who felt that there were enough churches in the area. Undeterred, he submitted a new application for a smaller space, which was eventually approved by the East Suffolk Council in 2019.

In January of the following year, Ed Sheeran received permission to include a 9ft by 6ft burial crypt within the chapel. Additionally, plans for a 7ft tower lightning rod to safely dissipate electrical charges were also approved. The placement of the chapel on the eastern side of the estate was explained as a nod to both Abrahamic and oriental traditions, emphasizing the significance of the rising sun.

The chapel, which aims not to overshadow the nearby medieval Church of England church in the village, is a space for personal and family milestones, social gatherings, and celebrations like marriages and christenings. It is meant to accommodate Ed Sheeran’s diverse circle of friends, guests, and colleagues from various countries, faiths, and customs, providing them with a peaceful and undisturbed place for retreat, meditation, and observation.

The design of the chapel is rooted in Suffolk vernacular, drawing inspiration from shapes and forms familiar to all. It is intentionally multi-use and non-denominational, allowing each individual to interpret its symbolism freely.

Ed Sheeran will need a license if he intends to hold marriages in the chapel, which would require the chapel to be open to the public for three years. His rural retreat, dubbed ‘Sheeranville,’ has seen extensive renovations, including the creation of a pub, treehouse, underground music room, and tunnels. Other additions include a wildlife pond, outdoor kitchen, football pitch, kitchen garden, orchard, and an entertainment area with a hot tub and fire pit.
