Lee Wisniewski works as a mortgage broker, but even he is finding it tough to buy a house.

“I’d given up. There was not enough stock that suits what we’ve been after,” he said.

Potential homebuyers are set to face fierce competition this spring, with the number of new listings set to hit the market tipped to be more subdued than in previous years.

Those who work in the industry dressing homes ready for sale, such as property stylists and interior decorators, offer a glimpse into the outlook for the coming months – and there is little comfort for frustrated buyers.

Mr Wisniewski, his wife Jess and their daughter live in a rental in Geelong, and he commutes to Melbourne three days a week. They are now looking to buy before the couple’s second child is born later this year.
