NRL icon James Maloney has successfully offloaded his seaside residence ahead of its scheduled auction on Saturday, fetching a price significantly surpassing expectations.
The property, located in Maroubra’s Manwaring Ave, has been acquired by renters from Randwick. Maloney, a two-time premiership winner, and his wife Jess Anderson have opted for a change, purchasing a new home in Townsville as Maloney takes up a coaching role with the North Queensland Cowboys for the next two seasons.

The sale of their four-bedroom Maroubra home garnered an impressive $2.75 million, exceeding the initial price guide of $2.3 million by $450,000. Jack McGhee, Associate Director at Ray White Eastern Beaches, mentioned the interest from investors but highlighted that the eventual buyer presented a substantial offer, sealing the deal.
The purchasers, reportedly a young couple currently renting in Randwick, view the property initially as an investment, with rental returns estimated at $1,400 per week. However, there’s potential for them to inhabit the residence themselves in the coming years.

The appeal of the Maroubra property was evident given its comparatively lower price guide against the PropTrack median of $3,167,500. Situated on a 247 sqm block, the house spans three levels and last changed hands for $1,160,000 back in 2012.

Maloney, who had relocated to Glenmore Park in 2018 during his stint with the Penrith Panthers, has now leased out that property as he embarks on his coaching journey with the Cowboys. His retirement from playing professionally came last year following a successful career that included NRL premierships with the Roosters in 2013 and the Cronulla Sharks in 2016. Over his career, he played 247 games, representing various clubs including the Storm, Warriors, Roosters, Sharks, and Panthers.
