Hanmer Springs, Canterbury, is gearing up for an exhilarating experience with the imminent launch of its newest attractions, the Violet Vortex and Waiau Winder hydro slides. These thrilling additions, aptly named through a public vote, come with cutting-edge features that are unparalleled in New Zealand.

Set to open their doors to the public at 10 am on Wednesday, October 11, these dynamic slides will replace the aged green and beige slides, which have collectively thrilled riders approximately 17 million times over their 25-year lifespan.

Graeme Abbot, the General Manager of Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa, shared that the Violet Vortex incorporates LED technology, while the Waiau Winder boasts captivating visual projections. The versatility of these visual projections allows for an ever-changing experience, with the ability to transport riders to diverse settings, whether it be mountain snowscapes or underwater adventures.

Abbot explained, “We’re projecting images onto the side of the slide as you descend, and the current projection makes it feel like you’re right next to a tropical fish tank.”

One of the innovative design aspects of these new slides is the elimination of the need for rafts or other equipment, thanks to the utilization of ‘runout channels’ that ensure a smooth conclusion to the ride without the requirement for a separate splashdown pool.

While the Violet Vortex and Waiau Winder promise an exciting new adventure, Hanmer Springs Pools will continue to offer the Superbowl and Conical Thrill slides, which were introduced in 2010 and 2019, respectively.

The opening of these slides is a momentous occasion and the result of months of dedicated effort and commitment from the entire project team, as Abbot expressed.

Additionally, Hanmer Springs Pools is extending an invitation to residents and ratepayers to enjoy the slides for free on October 11 and 12, provided they can present a current Residents and Ratepayers card.
