It seemed like the perfect house for a large whanau, before the bathroom tiles cracked and became an asbestos nightmare.
North Canterbury woman Michelle Anglem-Crofts is now anxious her eight young grandchildren were exposed to the carcinogen for up to 18 months.
Anglem-Crofts moved into the rental house in the Ngāi Tūāhuriri settlement at Tuahiwi about two years ago with her two daughters and grandson. Her rūnanga – Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri – own the rental home.
Her 96-year-old mother moved in about eight months ago when Anglem-Crofts became her full-time carer. Her other grandchildren often visited or stayed over.
