Petone

How do you farewell a house that has been in the family for 99 years – the place where your mother was born and lived her entire life? And the place where you and your seven siblings grew up?

The Guthrie-Kane family captured a final moment before putting the Petone family home on the market. There’s a photo of the eight of them on the veranda of the small, three-bedroom house that served the family well for nigh on a century.

One of the siblings, Peter Kane, says the house in Bay Street was bought in 1920 by their grandfather John (Jack) Patrick Guthrie, an engine driver who married Irish immigrant Mary Ann O’Donnell from County Clare.
