Rental viewings in Invercargill are so crowded with desperate families “they feel like garage sales,” said Triscina Metternich. 

It took the mother of three several months to sign a lease on a four-bedroom in Strathem. 

“One property we went to had 30-40 family applicants. It was actually quite upsetting,” she said. 

“It has gotten hard down here. There used to be pages and pages of rentals. Now families are fighting over each one.”
