Starter Pack. That was the estate agent’s pitch for a tidy little ex-state house in Napier’s Maraenui that caught my eye earlier this year.
I was finally in a position to start looking for a house, having met the minimum requirements that a bank would need to consider me for a mortgage.
It felt amazing and daunting at the same time to be able to look through the listings on Trade Me and make a genuine enquiry. There was a time when I frequented open homes like a ghost, a voyeur into the lives of others.
I gave it up, though, and forbid my family from talking about house prices because it would induce a rising sense of gloom.
