Tysen and Mel Kay of Auckland found the perfect house for their young family – in Nelson.

It was a three-bedroom 1930s character bungalow that they could relocate 900km and pop up on their 8000 square-metre building site in the middle of a forest at Makarau, north of Kaukapakapa.

They knew they could put the house on the site. “When we came to buy a site, I searched TradeMe under ‘no covenants’,” says Tysen Kay. “We were prepared to look anywhere, and this site, on a hill surrounded by forest, was perfect. And I just love Victorian and traditional houses, so it seemed a great way to get our home.”
