All Black legend Sir John Kirwan and his wife Fiorella are the stars of a new reality TV series to screen later this month.

The rugby star, who has faced personal battles that led him to be become an advocate for mental health, takes on a challenging new project – tearing down the family’s old bach at Waihi Beach and replacing it with a new one.

The Bach That JK Built follows the build by Kirwan, who says he has been coming to the idyllic beach in the Bay of Plenty as long as he can remember – it has always been a place that provides solace.

Kirwan and wife Fiorella made the tough decision to tear down a bach they built in 1991, which they describe as a “nightmare building”.

“All round the world, (in) moments of quietness in a hotel room in the middle of nowhere I would always bring myself back to this little place here,” he says.

Kirwan’s parents bought a bach at the beach when he was eight ,and JK and his wife, Fiorella built a holiday home in 1991, so they have a lifetime of memories in the house.
