Prime Industrial Land with a Colorful Past Hits the Market

A parcel of prime industrial land, once serving as the stronghold for the notorious Devils Henchmen Motorcycle Club in Canterbury, is now up for sale. The gang’s fortified clubhouse, situated on Meadows Rd, Washdyke, was a two-storey pad equipped with a fully functional bar. However, in a shocking turn of events, the property was taken over by a rival gang, the Rebels MC from Christchurch, in an armed invasion.

Following this takeover, the Henchmen struck a deal with the Timaru District Council, selling the property for more than $1 million, leading to the expulsion of the Rebels and the subsequent demolition of the buildings. The land, covering 8766sq m, was confirmed to have been bought by the council in May 2023.

Now, the council is offering this high-profile and sought-after property for sale, along with a neighboring site, with both being zoned for industrial use. Boasting excellent development potential, the properties provide access to essential utilities like water, power, and fiber internet. Furthermore, their strategic location offers easy access to State Highway 1, the Timaru CBD, and the port.

Timaru district mayor, Nigel Bowen, expressed satisfaction with the swift efforts of the council team and local contractors in clearing the properties for marketing. The council plans to sell the properties via private tender, with the closing date set for August 24. After the council’s approval at its September 5 meeting, the successful buyer will be announced publicly. Given the demand for land in Washdyke’s industrial hub, the properties are expected to attract developers and businesses seeking to expand or establish a presence in Timaru.
