Former Labour cabinet minister Stuart Nash has undergone a transformative year, marked by the loss of his cabinet portfolio in March due to “breaches to the Cabinet Manual.” After 14 years in Parliament, he opted to exit the political arena in the recent general election. Now employed as the commercial director for the renowned global recruitment company Robert Walters, Nash and his wife Sarah have listed their charming 1915 bungalow on Bluff Hill, Napier.

Despite the significant changes, the couple has no plans to relocate to another city. Nash affirms, “We are definitely staying in the Bay, but now looking for another project.” Describing their current residence as a cherished family home for over 12 years, Nash highlights its modern indoor comfort and inviting outdoor spaces designed to maximize the Hawke’s Bay weather and lifestyle.
Council records reveal that the couple acquired the property for $545,000 in 2010, and its valuation as of September 2020 is $1,170,000. Phil Quinney of NZ Sotheby’s International Realty, the listing agent, praises the house as an “architectural gem” and a local landmark on Milton Rd. Designed by the renowned early 20th-century architects Finch & Westerholm, the house boasts large, terraced areas of flat land, accommodating a lawn, a 9m heated swimming pool, and a basketball “D.”
Quinney details the property’s unique features, including tiers with fruit trees, flat concrete areas for sports and play, an electric vehicle charging station, an entertainment level with an in-ground pool, patio, and barbecue area, and an upper tier with a spacious lawn and home office. The five-bedroom house, sitting on a 1739m² site, features stone and plastered brick construction, native timber flooring, leadlight bay windows, timber panelling, and various character elements throughout.
The property, known as a “politician’s playground,” includes a large basement used as a games room and workshop, along with a separate office-studio boasting its fireplace. The house is being offered for sale by tender at 60 Milton Rd, Napier, with a deadline of December 7, 2023, and viewings available by appointment only. Quinney invites potential buyers with a budget “circa” $1.5 million to explore the property, emphasizing that the final sale price is expected to surpass this figure.
