Auction Details
Ten buyers engaged in a fierce bidding war late into the night, vying for the prestigious Isle of Capri trophy home. Eventually, the mansion claimed the title of the most expensive residential property ever sold at auction in Queensland. The remarkable estate, located on a 2,197 sqm lot with an impressive 42.1m of water frontage, was rumored to have served as accommodation for Hollywood superstar Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson during the filming of the blockbuster movie San Andreas in 2014.

Marketing and Auctioneer
The property was marketed by Kollosche agents Sam Guo, Julia Kuo, Claire Dai, and Michael Kollosche. The highly anticipated auction, conducted by auctioneer Rob Doorey from Apollo Auctions, witnessed a total of 42 bids spanning over an hour. Commencing at $15 million, the bidding briefly paused at $20.1 million for negotiations with the sellers before multiple competitive offers ensued. Ultimately, the last two remaining buyers engaged in a phone bidding war, with an Australian family emerging triumphant as Mr. Doorey called for final bids from the crowd gathered onsite on a crisp winter evening.
The New Owner and Their Vision
According to Mr. Guo, the new owner is described as an “astute buyer” who acquired the property as their primary residence. The family was drawn to the mansion due to its enviable location, recognizing it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a prestigious piece of Gold Coast real estate. The buyers appreciated the significance of the location and believed it perfectly suited their family’s needs.

The Magnificent Features
This secluded Balinese-style mansion, sprawled across four blocks, was originally constructed in the 1990s by Doug Spong, a pioneer in the surfwear industry. Hongbo Li and Liyan Song, the vendors, purchased the property for $15.5 million in 2016, though they were rumored never to have set foot inside their spectacular holiday home. Mr. Li, in search of an “iconic home” in the vibrant city of the Gold Coast, was captivated by the estate’s grandeur, impressive size, strategic position, and breathtaking views, both during the day and at night.
The exquisite features of the property include a north-facing design, sandstone-and-timber construction, double security gates, a foyer with full-height glazing and a soaring void, a private beach area, a billiards room, a 7000-bottle wine cellar, an in-ground spa and plunge pool, a separate wet-edge pool, a sauna, a workshop, a cinema room, and a six-car basement garage. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by two wings encircling a central courtyard and atrium, creating an enchanting ambiance where waterways flow seamlessly inside and outside the five-bedroom, five-bathroom mansion spread across three levels. Moreover, the panoramic views extend across Adams Basin and Girung Island, while the glittering skyline of the Gold Coast takes center stage after dark.
