When Vincent Mortimer and Avrael Semple rebuilt their Clifton Hill home after the earthquakes, their focus was on keeping it simple, soothing and kind on the environment.

The couple and their children, Hamish, 15 and Niamh, 17, had been in their home for only five nights before the worst of the Christchurch earthquakes hit. Bricks fell off, the chimney went through the ceiling and the house came off its foundations and was “twisted and uninhabitable”, according to Mortimer.

“We went in [to get things out] and realised very quickly we shouldn’t be in there,” he says.
