The tiny town of Sherenden has one school and a community hall, but Lance and Sarah Walker are setting their future there, brick by brick.

The couple moved to the small Hawke’s Bay settlement, west of Napier and Hastings, from Auckland in February last year for a “major” lifestyle change which has seen them move into a Himalayan bell tent and learn the art of brickmaking to build what they hope will be a barn and luxury lodge.

After spending the last 18 months getting rid of weeds, planting garden vegetables and trees, and rearing chickens and horses on the nearly seven hectare property, they’ve invested in a $30,000 brick making machine and hope to turn clay from the land into a home.
