A luxury apartment within one of Wellington’s most historic buildings has come to market for the first time.

Located inside the New Zealand Heritage-listed Missions to Seamen building at 7 Stout Steet, apartment 1A is being sold by premium real estate agency New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty (NZSIR).

NZSIR sales associate Flora Greig says properties with this level of historic significance are rare to the open market.

“This magnificent building is a Wellington icon and contributes to the central Heritage Area,” she says. “It houses 10 separate residences, with apartment 1A being the only residence to offer sweeping views across the CBD. This is the first time this residence has ever been on the market, so it’s a very exciting opportunity for someone to acquire an important piece of Wellington’s history.”

Built in 1903, the Missions to Seamen building was designed by Chrichton and McKay, who conceived many of Wellington’s landmark buildings, and displays an eclectic mix of Gothic, Romanesque and Classical architecture on a prime central corner site. It was reinvigorated in 1994 with the development of 10 private apartments, with each apartment owner allocated a share of the freehold.

“The majestic grand window spanning both floors of apartment 1A is a sight to behold, providing direct views over the Beehive, the Old High Court and the historic Law Faculty of Victoria University,” adds Greig. “The home’s central location is proximate to one of NZ’s best retail streets, Lambton Quay, and within easy walking distance to the waterfront and Sky Stadium.”

The origins of the Edwardian-style building date back to more than a century ago. It was constructed as the first permanent Missions to Seamen location in Wellington, used as a popular social service for travelling sailors before World War I.

Today, the 133sq m apartment is a contemporary, light-filled space with a nod to eras gone by with impeccably maintained Kauri beams, vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows. Its current owners Nigel and Christine Jones have enjoyed the apartment as a holiday home for 26 years, however the couple are now ready to pass this important piece of history to another family.

“We are proud to be facilitating the sale of this phenomenal property,” adds Greig. “This landmark location offers endless opportunities to enjoy NZ’s capital city at its finest.”
