PHOTO: 123RF – Ten years ago the difference between a lower quartile-priced house in Auckland and a median-priced house was $110,000, but now the difference is $196,000.

If you thought getting into your first home was hard, wait until you try to move to your second.

With slow wage growth, house prices rising fast, and bank lending rules tightening, it’s become much more common to get stuck in what was meant to be a first home.

One buyer, who did not want to be identified because she is still in negotiations, said she and her husband had been looking for a new house for a year before they found one to offer on.

“We have been living in our house since 2013 and it was always the plan that when we were pregnant with our second child we would move on to something bigger.”
