A desperate lack of rentals is driving some away from Raglan despite more than a third of homes in the seaside town sitting empty.
Rising house prices, rental shortages and the popularity of sites like Airbnb are piling pressure on people’s ability to live in the town and prompted a recently-formed group to look for solutions.
About a third of Raglan homes are classed as unoccupied “holiday homes”, according to a mid-2017 report to Waikato District Council, with several hundred listed on Airbnb and Bookabach.
