Drill down into the property figures and you’ll find some interesting if not unexpected trends.
For some years, people have been moving out of Auckland, first to “halo” areas like Hamilton, Northland and Tauranga.
Then smaller cities, Palmerston North, Gisborne, Hastings, Whanganui, Whangarei, Upper Hutt, and Dunedin, have also started to boom, with annual growth rates last year of more than 10 per cent.
Now the people who can no longer afford to live in these places are looking further afield again.
