Melbourne’s love affair with wine is more alive than ever with a plethora of wine bars and cellars hitting the city’s newest apartment towers.

The rising role of wine in the apartment market is being driven by wealthy downsizers with a penchant for a good drop. Private cellars in penthouses are the peak luxury offering, followed by communal wine storage facilities and private wine fridges.

Business is booming for wine cellar designer Nigel Pemberton. His company Vine and Vault used to mainly cater to wine lovers installing cellars in their homes, but the rise of Melbourne’s apartment market has changed all that.

“As apartment living has become more popular, everything has gone toward more apartment work for us,” he said.
