OPINION: As the saying goes, the best time to buy a house is​ five years ago. Or is that 10 years ago?

Maybe it was almost 15 years ago, when I first saw this adorable little Mid-century, one-bed company share at Petone Beach for under $100,000 that a few years later would pop back on the market for a whopping $260,000.

It certainly wasn’t three weeks ago, when the drop in house prices those “in the know” wailed would follow lockdown and the world’s slow slide into economic recession failed to materialise. Now, though they still predict a small dip, it seems none of the experts agree on what’s going to happen with house prices.

It’s time for some tough talk, Aotearoa New Zealand: It shouldn’t take a pandemic to make housing affordable.

When I wrote about my regret over missing out on that lovely beachside place last year, I convinced myself that, though high, the price was reasonable given Petone’s sky-rocketing popularity. Also, houses are expensive, right? That’s just how it is.
