Evan Mayo

Don’t expect architect Evan Mayo to stamp his style all over your new build.

He’s not that sort of architect – he finds it odd that people are able to drive down the street and say: “Oh, that’s a so-and-so house.”

“There is a perception out there that architects like to dictate what they want, not what the clients want, which is where those criticisms of arrogance come from,” Mayo says. “But that’s not how we operate. I wouldn’t want to be known for a ‘style’. Every client is different, and so is every project.”

Mayo, who established Architecture Bureau in Hamilton 11 years ago, is clearly doing it right – he has won several NZIA awards, including one for his own home renovation.
