A fresh face is about to join New Zealand’s supermarket scene as the independent Fresh in Fresh Out (FIFO) prepares to launch a store in Hamilton. Nawton, a western suburb, has been without a supermarket for eight months following the closure of Countdown due to ongoing crime issues.
Owner Manish Thakker revealed to Newstalk ZB’s Jack Tame that the shopping center’s landlord initially approached him to consider filling the void. Local MP Tama Potaka also encouraged Thakker to consider the idea of opening a supermarket.
Initially hesitant due to the scale and demographic challenges, Thakker eventually decided to take on the venture, citing his and his wife’s hard work in their dairy business as a foundation for success. Thakker noted the rigid protocols and decision-making limitations of larger franchise groups like Countdown, highlighting his belief that a more agile approach could yield positive results.
Despite concerns about crime, Thakker expressed hope that the new government would address the issue. In the meantime, he plans to implement security measures and has received strong support from the local community, who have offered suggestions to combat crime.
FIFO awaits approval for its liquor license from the Hamilton City Council and is poised to become one of New Zealand’s largest independent supermarkets upon its opening on Saturday, May 3rd.
