A law to make leasehold land into freehold in a north Taranaki town has led to a flurry of sales interest – but there are fears that some people living on the sections are being priced out of the market.
Real estate agent Sarah Bentley-Korff said she was dealing with an influx of interest regarding some of the 770 properties that are subject to the Waitara Lands Act, which came into force in March.
She believed the option to shrug off the leasehold tag, which in the past put potential buyers off, would prove to be a boon for Waitara.
But the pricetag associated with potential land purchases is proving too much for some older leaseholders, who can’t afford a step up the property ladder.
