The sale of John Lennon’s iconic New York City penthouse has opened a window into the incredible life of the legendary musician.

The Manhattan home that was part of some of the most famous moments in the revered musician’s life has been listed for sale for $US5.5 million ($A7.65 million).

It is where Lennon was photographed in a tank top that read – New York City – and it is also where the ex-Beatle claimed he saw a UFO.

“I was lying naked on my bed, when I had this urge,” Lennon told Interview.

“So I went to the window, just dreaming around in my usual poetic frame of mind. There, as I turned my head, hovering over the next building, no more than 100 feet away was this thing with ordinary electric light bulbs flashing on and off round the bottom, one non-blinking red light on top.”
