PHOTO: HARCOURTS – Sheppard’s former home is still gracious.

The Christchurch villa where Kate Sheppard ran her suffrage campaign has been put on the market as the country prepares for the 125-year anniversary of women being given the vote.

It is being sold by owner of 33 years Julia Burbury who said she and her ex-husband “had no idea” of its significance when they bought it.

Now a gracious four-bedroom, three-bathroom home on a 4321sqm section with a capital valuation of $3.15 million, the house was where Sheppard and her fellow suffragists wrote pamphlets, prepared speeches and collected thousands of signatures for their petition – the largest ever presented to Parliament.
