A Cromwell man who turned down $1 million to make way for a large-scale development says he will not be “bribed” to leave his piece of paradise.

Rex Edgar gave evidence during the third week of a plan change hearing to allow for a 900-lot residential development on the outskirts of the Central Otago township and opposite Highlands Motorsport Park and Central Motor Speedway.

Edgar’s home sits on a 2-hectare lot that is surrounded by 49.8ha of land currently zoned rural residential and rural and earmarked for the development, which includes a retirement village, shops and potentially a school.
