The wife of late cricketing legend Dean Jones has listed the couple’s property where they hosted a slew of household sporting names over their 30 years at the home

The Macedon Ranges property where late Australian cricketer, coach and commentator Dean Jones lived with his family has been listed by his wife, Jane Jones with $2.4m-$2.6m price hopes.

The batsman resided at the 9-13 William St, Romsey, estate for 30 years with Ms Jones and their two daughters, Phoebe and Isabella, before his tragic death in 2020.

During that time, when Jones returned home from touring overseas, the couple hosted many parties and Christmas dinners with a slew of household sporting names, including Australian icons like cricketer Allan Border, former Brisbane and Carlton football player Richard Hadley, and golfer Craig Parry.

The lush estate is for sale for the first time in 33 years and has had only three owners in its lifetime.

Seven original fireplaces are found throughout the historic home.

International guests of the Romsey abode included the likes of English cricket commentator Lord Ian Botham, Welsh commentator Alan Wilkins, and Indian cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle.

Jones was known for his cricketing career between 1984 and 1992, playing 52 Test matches and being part of the Australian team that won their first title in the 1987 Cricket World Cup.

Although he retired from the game in 1998, he remained in the industry as a coach and commentator, and was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2019.

Ms Jones said her husband enjoyed coming back to the tranquil property after the “hustle and bustle of cricket life”.

“With the amount of travelling he did, he had a big career overseas in India and Pakistan so he wasn’t home very much,” she said.

“But when he did come home he just loved the country lifestyle and kicking back and relaxing after being on the road for eight months of the year. He enjoyed that break when he did come home and he was a regular golfer at Heathcote Golf Club.”

Ms Jones also spoke of the entertaining they did at the house, where they hosted many “Lords, Sirs and a whole gamut of cricket players”.

“Allan Border stayed with us many times, (Dean and him) were great buddies and they loved to have a glass of red here,” she said.

“Anyone and everyone in the Australian and international teams have been here, many when they were touring here would have Christmas with us because of the Boxing Day test.

“They’d be away from their home so I always said it’s an open house if anyone is on their own and wants to join us, the more the merrier … the kids always loved it.”

The sprawling 3501sq m property also has a history dating back to 1900, when it was built by the local White family, who established Romsey’s first grocery store and haberdashery.
