The long-awaited, multimillion-dollar decision on the future of Taranaki’s premier sports stadium was finally reached this week – but the final whistle still hasn’t been heard.
A stoush over how much should be spent on New Plymouth’s earthquake-prone Yarrow Stadium may end up being resolved by lawyers or ministerial intervention.
On Tuesday, the Taranaki Regional Council (TRC) voted to spend up to $50 million on repairs and upgrades, despite pleas from South Taranaki District Council (STDC), Sport Taranaki, smaller sporting groups and a number of individual submitters to only commit to repairing the stands – work estimated to cost $33m.
