Wellington should be taking advantage of its status as an earthquake ‘‘laboratory’’, according to a property owner who uses new sensors to measure the impact of quakes on his buildings.

The capital is increasingly using new technology to measure the exact impact of tremors, with 15 building in the city fitted with new sensors and council in commercial talks to fit about 100 more through the city.

The recent Levin earthquakes were the first big test for sensors in Wellington buildings and the results were surprising.

Wellington property developer Ian Cassels has installed quake sensors in four of his buildings and said more needs to be done to paint an accurate picture of how the city behaves during earthquakes.

Cassels was happy to share findings from the seismic sensors in his buildings to create a better picture of what was happening across the city.
