This is a tragic and disturbing case involving the death of Maleesa Mooney, a model and real estate agent in California. Magnus Daniel Humphrey, a resident of Hopkins, Minnesota, has been charged with her murder and torture. Despite the severity of the charges, Humphrey pleaded not guilty during a court hearing.
The details surrounding Mooney’s death are particularly gruesome, as her body was found bound and stuffed in her refrigerator during a police welfare check. The Medical Examiner’s report indicated that she had been subjected to homicidal violence. Surveillance footage showed an unidentified man entering her residence after she was last seen alive, carrying plastic bags and using her key fob to access the building.
Humphrey, who was already on probation for drug offenses, has a prior conviction for possession with intent to distribute heroin in 2016. He was sentenced to six years in prison for that offense.
Despite being arrested in Minnesota on a probation violation, Humphrey waived extradition and was transferred to Los Angeles County for custody. He is being held without bond and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to the horrific nature of the crime and the loss of a promising young woman. Mooney’s family and loved ones are grappling with the tragedy, with her sister describing her as an “amazing girl” who had a bright future ahead of her.
