PHOTO: ROSS GIBLIN/STUFF – Most of the buildings identified as posing a threat to public safety because of unreinforced masonry have had works undertaken, despite council concerns many would miss the deadline.
Owners of dozens Wellington buildings are scrambling to complete emergency repairs in a bid to avoid prosecution and gain a public subsidy.
From today, dangerous building notices begin expiring on buildings which were identified as having unreinforced masonry (URM) in early 2017.
Deadlines on more than 30 buildings in the capital that are still subject to the notices expire over the coming fortnight.
Owners who miss the deadline face fines of up to $200,000, occupants could be excluded from the building and barriers could be erected to protect the public. Owners will automatically be ineligible for taxpayer compensation of up to $65,000.
