Palmerston North city councillors are refusing to talk about a secret $391,000 grant they made to giant motor company Toyota NZ.

Mayor Grant Smith and a majority of councillors discussed and voted in favour of the grant in a meeting closed to the public in 2017.

The payment of the grant of $391,000 plus GST related to Toyota NZ’s expansion of its Roberts Line head office and national distribution centre was confirmed after an official information request by the Taxpayers’ Union.
