A former East Melbourne church that was converted to a home by the late businessman and former Geelong Cats president Frank Costa has hit the market with a price guide of $3.5 million to $3.8 million.

The unique home at 2-6 Morrison Place was home to the New Temple Church and built in 1872. It later became a storeroom for the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital, which is very close by.

The property was bought by Costa and his wife Shirley in 1998 for $680,000, records show, with the couple turning it into a luxurious three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with a garage.

Jellis Craig Armadale selling agent and auctioneer David Sciola said Costa would stay in the East Melbourne home when he had business in Melbourne.

“It was primarily used as a home when he came to Melbourne and needed to stay overnight,” Mr Sciola said.

The pair were trailblazers in church conversions,  Mr Sciola said, converting their home to a residential property long before such conversions were popular.

“They possibly are trendsetters because most of the church conversions have really been done in the past 10 years,” he said.
