Melbourne real estate agents are preparing for a complete lockdown of the property market, with the Victorian government confirming all property activity will move completely online for the next six weeks.

It was the worst-case scenario that agents had been fearing since the latest stage 4 rules were announced on Monday afternoon – including a ban on one-on-one inspections – as businesses were asked to close and vendors and buyers requested to stay at home.

A Facebook post from Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on Monday night stated: “Businesses that are closing, including: property and real estate, with online inspections and auctions permitted.”

Agents across the city spent Tuesday scrambling to film properties in preparation for the online-only inspection changes, as well as moving auctions forward ahead of schedule.

By Tuesday afternoon, the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed to Domain that, for the first time in its history, Melbourne’s property market would move to exclusively online activity only.
