A Waikato real estate company has paid a customer’s home deposit after the woman lost the original $28,500 deposit in a scam.

Stuff previously reported that Morrinsville grandmother Janice Blaikie was the victim of a phishing scam whilst buying a property.

Blaikie was sent the bank account details by what she thought was the LJ Hooker real estate agent who was managing the listing and so put the money into that account.

However, it later turned out that the email wasn’t from the real estate agent at all, but a scammer.

Blaikie had resigned herself to the fact that she would never see a cent of the money she lost again. But what was harder to deal with was the possibility that she might not be able to purchase the property she’d hoped to.
