When he retired from full-time work, Andy Golem took a three-day-a-week job at Bunnings, just to keep his hand in. His wife Fleur went down to two days a week at the hospital in Whakatane, where they live.
“Like a little old semi-retired couple” they settled in to enjoy the fruits of their lean, hard working years, and maybe enjoy some of that “plenty” promised in the name of the region. It’s not called the Bay of Plenty for nothing, after all.
Except the Golems weren’t 65 when they packed in the 9 to 5, Monday to Friday lifestyle. They weren’t 55. They weren’t even 35. Andy and Fleur Golem were mortgage free at 28 and semi-retired at 31.
