A historic castle hidden in the hills and a curved modern mansion on picturesque acreage are among the South Australian homes people haven’t been able to keep their eyes off this year.

They are just two of the state’s top 10 most popular properties of 2020, which are the listings with the most views on realestate.com.au between January and mid-November.

Character homes and lifestyle properties dominated the list, with the property taking out the number one spot offering the best of both worlds.

The Medindie villa at 32 Avenel Gardens Road, which is on a 1110sqm block and has a pool and outdoor entertainment area with built-in barbecue, was the state’s most viewed property.

It was recently sold for an undisclosed price by Booth & Booth Real Estate agent Jamie Brown, who also sold two other properties on the list.

“All three properties were very unique and in premium spots,” he said.

“The consistent interest was the stunning streetscapes.”

He said character homes that had been sympathetically renovated and extended were always popular, while historic homes like the Stirling castle at 19 Pine Street, which was ranked seventh on the list, were captivating.

“The Stirling home is eye-candy, you could look at it all day,” he said.

“You’d never get tired of driving up the beautiful meandering driveway and seeing that castle appear.”

However, he said COVID-19 had made people long for more space, pushing both househunters and daydreamers trawling through listings as an escape from the pandemic to search for properties on larger blocks and in locations a bit further out from the city.

One of the regional properties admired most this year was the modern Heathfield mansion at 14 Williams Road, which was ranked second on the top 10 list.

South Australia Sotheby’s International Realty principal Grant Giordano, who is selling the property with Jacqui Ilicic, described it as not just a practical and warm family home but a “thought-provoking sculpture”.

While its unique curved design attracted a lot of attention, Mr Giordano said the home’s location was increasingly becoming more popular, especially in the wake of COVID-19.

“As the hills’ way of life is unique to this region, many expats returning from abroad, interstate purchasers and international home buyers seeking a lifestyle change flock to this area,” he said.
