To view these photos of the little church on a hill at Awhitu is to step back in time –more than 130 years.
Back then the former Kohekohe Presbyterian Church in Franklin was the place where the locals gathered for services, Sunday School, bible study and temperance meetings.
Today, the former church is more often visited by photographers. The Auckland Council’s Historic Heritage Evaluation refers to it as “New Zealand’s most photogenic church” – and it has to be a strong rival to Lake Tekapo’s Church of the Good Shepherd.
But it’s a building in need of a new owner. The 2732 square-metre property has been listed for sale with Antony Greenfield of Barfoot & Thompson, Waiuku, for $495,000.
