A $52 million stand-alone Naenae pool will be the first significant issue facing Hutt City councillors at their first meeting on Tuesday.

The pool closed earlier this year after being declared earthquake prone.

It’s closure has had a devastating impact on the nearby shopping centre. Businesses have closed, with some reporting a downturn of as much as 75 per cent.

Built in 1956, the Olympic-sized pool drew 450,000 visitors to the suburb each year.

Politicians agreed from day one that the pool would be repaired or replaced.

A report to councillors puts the cost of a new stand-alone pool at $52m, although that does not take into account any possible geotechnical issues associated with rebuilding.
