A rare three-level apartment perched mere metres from Noosa’s golden dunes has fetched $16.1 million under the hammer – shattering the Queensland unit price record.
An unnamed – but reportedly interstate – buyer snatched the keys to 5/81 Hastings Street, Noosa Heads, from four other phone bidders at the landmark auction on Friday, making the home one of two to fetch more than $13 million in three days.
In total more than $45 million was paid from Friday to Sunday across just a handful of high-end auctions in Noosa, demonstrating the incredible strength of one of the nation’s hottest coastal markets.
“People are investing in their lifestyles [more than ever] … and partly due to COVID they’ve had more time to reflect on their lives and that is what’s driving people to consider coastal communities. Noosa is at the top of that wish list,” said Tom Offermann, of Tom Offermann Real Estate.
“I’m not surprised this apartment broke the record … and now those buyers [who missed out] will be waiting for the next opportunity to come along. It could be another six months before an apartment like this comes on the market again.”
The previous unit record was only set in May, for a luxurious four-level penthouse at Soul on the Gold Coast, which fetched $15.25 million.
Mr Offermann, who sold the Noosa Heads apartment, said five registered bidders battled it out for the four-bedroom home, which boasts sweeping beach views, floor-to-ceiling glass and an immense 412 square metres of space.
Auctioneer Gordon Macdonald, of Sunshine Coast-based firm The Auction Group, called the event on Friday and said bids opened at an unusually low $12 million with two buyers battling it out in half-million-dollar rises to $15 million in what he said was a highly calculated affair despite the unique nature of the property.
“This apartment was all about the views that look straight down to Noosa main beach. You open up the windows and you hear the chatter of the beach and you feel the sea breeze … it’s just paradise,” Mr Macdonald said.
