OPINION: Travel trends are changing quickly. A decade ago, Queenstown was the gold at the end of the rainbow. While it will remain popular, tourists are increasingly in search of experiences off the beaten track. So here are some of the towns set to benefit.

Raglan

The Waikato’s once-sleepy surf village has become a significant destination for Aucklanders looking for funky accommodation.

One of the country’s coolest tree houses is tucked away in a forest overlooking the Tasman Sea, simply called “The Raglan Treehouse in the Woods.” Nearby is a seriously unusual house bus hideaway, known as “The Love Bus”. Both can be booked on Airbnb.

There are also numerous glamping spots including a “tipi forest”, yurts, and a waterfront silo with luxury accommodation inside.
