Becoming “Westies” has made it a whole lot easier for one Auckland young couple, 29 and 30, to get on the property ladder and own two houses valued at $1.7 million.

Although to be fair, Nathalie has lived out west all her life – she just had to convince her husband (who prefers to be anonymous) that Ranui was a good place to buy their first home when they were just 22 and 23.

The couple purchased that home in 2013, for $500,000. It was a four-bedroom brick-and-tile home and they put down a deposit of $50,000, all of which they saved themselves.

“A lots of our friends made fun of us for living in Ranui, as the reputation wasn’t the best, however the area was up-and-coming and it was very close to Henderson Heights,” says Nathalie. “And we knew one day the house price would  go up, so we ignored all the haters. Now that property is valued at $790 to $820k. We are very blessed.”
