Chapman-Taylor

Sitting high above the hills of Khandallah, like the crow’s nest of a great green sailing ship, is a cottage fit for a sailor.

Designed by pre-eminent Arts and Crafts architect James Chapman-Taylor, built by the man himself with his son Jack, the house is a unique part of New Zealand’s architectural history. And it looks like a something straight out of a storybook, outside and in.

“I think it was built for a sea captain,” says current owner Allan Johnson, who shares the home with wife Vanessa.

“There’s no port holes, but we see from Northland, to Wilton, right through Ngaio, through to the gap going to Broadmeadows. It’s lovely. With the decks at the back, when you get a north wind, they’re still very sheltered.”
