PHOTO: HERBST ARCHITECTS – Kawakawa House in Piha, designed by Herbst Architects, has won the prestigious Sir Ian Athfield Award for Housing at the 2018 NZ Architecture Awards.
There’s a certain similarity to the holiday homes we’ve come to recognise as being the work of Auckland architects Lance and Nicola Herbst.
It’s very much a pared-down, back-to-nature approach, and it’s exactly that driver that determined the design of the house that has just won the prestigious Sir Ian Athfield Award for Housing in this year’s New Zealand Architecture Awards, presented by the NZIA.
Kawakawa House, set amid an ancient pōhutukawa forest at Piha, was described by the the awards judges as “invigorating and inspiring”.
