Fletcher Building’s proposed cutbacks appear to have begun in Christchurch where one Placemakers store has closed.

A call to the Antigua St store revealed the store would remain permanently closed following the lifting of lockdown, although the company has not yet confirmed this.

A source, who asked to remain anonymous, told Stuff that staff at the store had been called to a meeting on Thursday morning and layoffs seemed likely.

Placemakers is the building products arm of Fletcher Building, which said last month that it would begin a consultation process on plans to reduce its workforce by 10 per cent.

Chief executive Ross Taylor said at the time that no part of the business was immune to the cuts, as it looked to slash 1000 jobs in New Zealand and 500 in Australia.
