According to realestate.com.au a heritage-listed Bendigo estate which “felt like home” to Priscilla Presley when she stayed there last year has hit the market.
The six-bedroom, six-bathroom house at 49 Rowan St has been listed with $3m price hopes after operating for a number of years as an accommodation site, currently The Suites, Villa Belgravia.
CoreLogic records show its vendors purchased the historic corner property in 2010 for $840,000.
They’ve since renovated the home’s lower level into two luxury, self-contained suites, where famed American actor and ex-wife of singer Elvis Presley, Priscilla Presley stayed in 2022 while opening Direct From Graceland, the Bendigo Art Gallery exhibition honouring her late husband.
McKean McGregor Real Estate Bendigo agent Bec Allen has the listing, who said Presley loved her stay at the suites.
“She said it felt like home,” Ms Allen said.
The property is also rich in history, having been built in 1869 by hospital contribution collector and prominent figure, Henry Hawkins.
It was later leased by one of the original owners of Bendigo’s iconic Shamrock Hotel, John Crowley, who then purchased the home in 1884.
After five years, Mr Crowley and his friend, renowned German-Australian architect William Vahland, known as the “premier architect of the Victorian goldfields”, upgraded the property to include the lower level and the current, Renaissance revival-style facade with seashell motifs paying homage to its history as a refuge for travellers.
It was first known as Marlborough Lodge, then Marlborough House, before its current operation as Villa Belgravia.
“(The vendors) have done a really detailed renovation of the property, the suites are absolutely stunning,” Ms Allen said.
“It’s an incredible property with beautiful views of the cathedral and lots of potential.”
She added there was strong interest for the home from buyers looking to continue running the downstairs retreat as a luxury Airbnb, particularly families planning to live in the main house.
“It’s seriously one of the best properties in Bendigo … it’s just a really beautiful family home,” Ms Allen said.
