Looking to buy in a capital city on a budget? House prices are soaring, but incredibly, there are still a handful of properties listed with price guides as modest as $300,000, even in pricey Sydney.
They range from apartments in the suburbs to inner-city studios – and in some cities, it will even stretch to an unassuming house on land.
Here’s where to look and what you’ll find.
Sydney
As the most expensive capital in the country, it’s no surprise that a budget of $300,000 won’t stretch far in the harbour city.
In Parramatta, in the city’s west, buyers can get their hands on a modern studio with a small balcony situated on the Great Western Highway for $239,000.
About a 10-kilometre drive south of there, a one-bedroom apartment with parking is for sale for $299,000 in Fairfield, while in St Marys – about a 45-kilometre drive from the CBD – buyers may just be able to get their hands on a two-bedroom top-floor apartment that is advertised for $289,950-$309,950.
Closer to the city, buyers will find a studio in the inner-west suburb of Petersham, which is scheduled for auction later this month with a price guide of $290,000.
You’ll have to be comfortable climbing a few stairs to get to your “built-in mezzanine bed”, but on the bright side, there’s some storage space underneath.
Melbourne
In Melbourne, buyers could just scrape into St Kilda, where a one-bedroom apartment without parking is advertised for bang on the $300,000 mark. The bedroom, sectioned off from the living and dining area by sliding doors, has a built-in wardrobe, and the unit opens out to a sun-drenched balcony.
In the city centre, a spacious one-bedroom apartment close to the Yarra River is advertised for $265,000-$285,000. In Footscray, about six kilometres west, buyers will also find a one-bedroom apartment with parking within budget – advertised for $260,000-$285,000.
Buyers could even get their hands on small two-bedroom apartments in Carlton and Caulfield East if the units sold at the lower end of their price guides of $280,000-$308,000 and $290,000-$319,000, respectively.
