Tourists have already deserted bushfire-hit regions of NSW including the Southern Highlands, Batemans Bay and the Blue Mountains and homebuyers are likely to do the same over the next 6 to 12 months as the fallout from the unprecedented fire season plays out in country and coastal hotspots.

In the usually busy end-of-year holiday period, hotel research firm STR said hotels within a two-hour drive south of Greater Sydney were just over half full. Room revenue plunged more than 30 per cent to just $102 a night.
