Real estate agent Andrew Harley revealed that the Browns Bay home, which was nearing completion, had to be listed due to the couple’s marital breakup and rising interest rates.
The listing, named ‘Untying the Knot & Unloading the Lot,’ was posted on TradeMe in early September.
One of the homeowners, a builder involved in the renovation, left a few rooms unfinished, though Harley assured that the remaining space was livable.
“Everything is functional; there are just some areas of the house that still need completion,” he explained.
The property was creatively marketed under the title ‘Untying the Knot & Unloading the Lot,’ a decision aimed at grabbing people’s attention.
“They are certainly not testing the market; there is a genuine opportunity here for someone to buy this home. The owners are 100% motivated to sell,” emphasized Harley.
Their situation is not unique.
As the real estate market experiences a downturn and the workforce contracts, two real estate agents share their insights.

Justin Mackay, a building inspector, noted that marital breakdowns have become one of the top five reasons for homes hitting the market, especially in the last 18 months since the onset of Covid.
Mackay, who inspects homes before or after sales, often discusses the reasons for moving with homeowners.
“It seems a bit more common lately. Many are selling due to the end of their marriage,” he observed. However, he pointed out that the most prevalent reason for selling remains people leaving Auckland, with others relocating for various reasons like downsizing, upsizing, or coping with financial pressures arising from high-interest rates.
